OUR METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:
Mind, Body & Athletics
Skateboarding is 90% mental and 10% ability.
We insure that beginner, intermediate, and advanced skaters are prepared both mentally and physically as they master basic and intermediate skills. This results in overall progression towards advanced maneuvers in a safe and controlled environment.
The Mind: Being able to visualize your skating experience before actually attempting any progression is key.
The Body: Being physically prepared for the challenges, strains, and strength necessary to progress is key.
The Athletics: Being able to perfect the basics as you look to progress is key.
What are the basics and why are they important to progression?
The basics build up the necessary skill set to progress in a way that emphasizes safety by mastering balance, timing, and visualization.
Balance: Finding your “center” and being able to manipulate the skateboard beneath you can be developed through mastering a group of entry-level maneuvers that are both safe and quite challenging to learn.
– The Manual (both standard and nose)
– Skating switch (starting early and frequent repetition is key)
– Implementing various skate training exercises
Timing: Using your newly found skill in balance will allow you to work on finding the lip (riding transition, snapping your tail (ollies), performing basic rotations (spinning the board horizontally on its axis i.e. shuv-its, and kick-flips. There are various skate training exercises we will share that perfect the skills necessary to start flipping and spinning your board.
Visualization: Possibly the most important of the skills necessary to safely progress and the least talked about. We use videos and in-person inspiration to help “train your brain” on what it feels like to perform and land a trick before even trying it for the first time. Various techniques are used to mimic body and foot positions, timing, and overall movements that comprise landing a new trick for the first time.
