Monday November 7th, 2011:

The 11th Annual Kona Halloween Am Jam went off without a hitch . . . except it was in November.  Due to rain on the original date, the event happened the weekend AFTER halloween.  No one seemed to mind though.  Dan Hatcher brought his Graffiti Skate Zone crew up from Palm Coast to take on the Kona locals.  Skaters from Flagler, Macclenny, Callahan, and Orange Park also showed up.  The sky was grey and the air was cold but no rain in sight.
In the 9& under division it was a battle between two first time competitors and Kona locals.  Arthur Smith took top honors but not without some great skating by Bryan Schmidt trying to hold him off.  The 10-12 division had riders from all over Florida.  Steve McKaig and Hunter Young were making the most of the Kona street course.  But it wasn't enough to stop Hal Scarborough from taking first place.  Bubba Stephens was right outside of the top three with Kona local, Dominic Palazzolo right behind.
The 13-15 division was dominated by those NOT local to Kona.  Dakota Hunt and Mark Robinson  represented GFZ well by taking second and third places.  But it was Daniel Ratliff from Viera, FL that impressed the judges the most.
The 16-up division was also dominated by out of town skaters.  Sam Rooks is no stranger to the Kona street course and took full advantage landing him into third place.  Scott Garrison rolled in from Flagler to take second place.  And is was Ish Cepeda in first place with tricks like kickflip boardslides on the a-frame rail.
The Open Am was a battle between the Kona locals.  Heavy hitters like Spencer Lau, Devin Bagnoli, Jake Sykes and Craig Clements were all there to win.  But the story of the day went to underdog local Grady Smith.  His all or nothing style paid off as he was "in the zone" during the final jam and never seemed to step off his board.  Highlights included a back tailslide on the silver rail and a 360 flip down the big-four.  Marshal LaFrance had his tech skill going full speed and landed in second place.  Blaine Partridge stayed smooth and stylish which earned him a spot on the podium in third place.
Congratulations to all the competitors and a big thanks to all the skaters, friends and family that came out to show their support.
